WordPress vs Static HTML for Tenerife Small Businesses

WordPress runs a huge share of the internet, and for good reason — it's flexible and familiar. But for a local service business in Tenerife — an electrician, a cleaner, a massage therapist — it's usually the wrong tool for the job. Every website we build now runs on hand-coded static HTML instead. Here's the actual reasoning, not just the marketing version.

How the Two Actually Work

A WordPress site rebuilds each page on the fly: the server wakes up, queries a database for your content, assembles the page from a theme and a stack of plugins, then sends it to the visitor. A static site skips all of that — the page is already built and sitting ready on the server, so it's delivered the instant it's requested.

That difference sounds small. In practice it shapes three things that matter a lot more to a small business than to a large one: security, ongoing cost, and how fast the site loads on the patchy 4G common around Costa Adeje and Las Américas.

1. Security: There's Nothing There to Hack

WordPress's popularity is also its biggest liability. Because so many sites run on it, it's the single most targeted CMS on the internet — most attacks aren't aimed at you specifically, they're automated scans probing thousands of sites at once for an outdated plugin or theme.

A static site has no database, no login panel, no plugin stack to patch. There's simply no attack surface for that kind of automated exploit to find. You're not relying on remembering to update anything to stay safe.

What You Actually Give Up

To be fair to WordPress: it's the right choice for sites that genuinely need a self-service CMS — a large editorial team publishing daily, a store with hundreds of changing products, or a business that wants to log in and rebuild pages themselves without calling a developer. For a local service business publishing the occasional update, that flexibility goes largely unused, while the security and speed cost stays real.
